Inge Spitz (nee Rosenthal), was born in Potsdam, Germany on March 15, 1927, the first of two daughters of Hermann and Johanna Rosenthal. In 1939, her parents sent Inge and her sister Edith, at the ages of 12 and 10, to safety in France, as hidden children. They were housed in a safe place called La Guette, owned by the wealthy Rothschild family.
Later in the war years, the sisters were moved to various other locations in France, and finally found refuge in Switzerland. In the meantime, their parents became separated from each other. Hermann spent the war years as a soldier in the British army. His wife Johanna was forced to work as a slave labourer for the Nazis in Latvia, and was eventually rescued by the Swedish Red Cross. The four Rosenthals were reunited as a family in London in 1946, and emigrated to Canada in 1948.
