Gabriella Stern Young married to Tony Young with one daughter Mikayla Young, and Jeremy Stern married to Gena Stern (nee Cymbaluk) Richard Stern married Doris Shaposnick on May 24th 1981 and added another wonderful parent to his life. Jonathan now had more family including 2 more siblings, Tamara Haskin (nee Bloom) married to Richard Haskin with 2 sons Stephen and Mathew Haskin and David Bloom married to Lorraine Bloom (nee Naimer)with 3 children Joshua, Benjamin and Rachel Bloom. Jonathan grew up in Ottawa Canada. He attended Lisgar Collegiate High School, graduating in 1987 with Honours in the accelerated program. From there he went to Queen’s University and graduated with a degree in commerce. Jonathan was extremely proficient in mathematics and knowledgeable in computers. Once he graduated, he settled in Ottawa and worked for TD Bank and then Oracle. Jon was destined for greater things but never forgot where he came from. He had met a young woman named Heather Thompson first on a high school trip to Texas and then again in University. It was meant to be and the two of them married in 1992. Their son Zachary William Stern was born in Ottawa on December 25, 1994. In 1995 Heather, Jonathan, and Zachary moved to Lisle Illinois as Jonathan had been enticed to move from Oracle Canada to Oracle US. It was then he was enticed to move to a new start up company called Ariba by his ex boss from Oracle Canada. He worked in technical sales and rode the tech wave and became incredibly successful. During this time his daughter, Sarah Joan Stern was born October 2, 1997. It was during this transition time that Jonathan co-authored a book with other Oracle employees and users. Oracle Essentials – what you need to know about Oracle based architecture and features. Jonathan loved to understand how things worked and then sought to translate his knowledge into something meaningful to others. To quote his co authors: Writing the first edition of Oracle essentials was a lengthy process. Jonathan wrote several of the original chapters and he also reviewed some of the other original work and was quick to identify where he thought something was wrong. For Jonathan, “wrong” meant that the text could be misinterpreted and further clarity was needed to make sure the right conclusion was drawn.” Jonathan was very proud of this accomplishment and while the surrounding text has changed with the release of the 4th edition that was in his memory, some of his original work remains. Jonathan had a passion for music and was a stellar drummer. He played with a heavy metal band called “Court Jester” and even took a 6 week sabbatical from work to play in Las Vegas and around Los Angeles. Jonathan, Heather, Zachary and Sarah created a beautiful life and home in Lisle Illinios and his door was always open to visitors so family visited often. He worked at Ariba for a few years and then left Ariba and went to work for another company, Initiate Systems in 2005 He was there for 2 short years and made a huge impact. Jonathan will be remembered for his laughter, his kindness and generosity. He was a wonderful son, father, brother, uncle and friend.
