Sadie Berish Shaposnick (Hebrew name Brucha Zelda) Born January 30, 1914; died May 28, 1978 Sadie was born to Louis (David Aria Leib) and Sarah Berish in Montreal, Quebec. She had two brothers, Teddy, and Issie. Sadie married Benjamin Shaposnick on September 3, 1933. Their son, Philip Shaposnick, was born on September 9, 1934. Their first daughter, Thelma Shaposnick/Savelson, was born on February 16, 1941, followed by their second daughter, Doris Shaposnick/Bloom/Stern, on September 29, 1944. Sadie and Ben moved to Brooklyn, New York when Philip was two years old. Ben felt he could make a good living selling flowers in the subway. They lived in the USA for approximately three years. Then they saved enough money to return to Canada, where Ben partnered with Moe York to open Canadian Wholesale Florist. After a few years of business, Ben and Moe included Sadie's brother Teddy in the partnership. Sadie was a devoted daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, a loving wife, and an amazing mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and aunt. No mission in life was too difficult for her. She loved giving of herself to others, and she valued friendships. She spent many hours devoted to Pioneer Women, Hadassah, Pythian Sisters, and Shaare Zedek Synagogue and Sisterhood. She loved her leadership position with the Welcome Club, a group that was dedicated to the Golden Age for Seniors at Shaare Zedek. Sadie was instrumental in having the first braille edition created for the very first Bar Mitzvah for a blind boy in Montreal. Community involvement was a priority in Sadie's life. She spent endless hours in the synagogue kitchen preparing for Meals on Wheels, decorating the synagogue succoth, fundraising for the Welcome Club, and volunteering at the Montreal Association for the Blind. Somehow, she managed to always have time for her husband and three children. Dinner, Shabbat, and home-cooked meals were available 24/7. She loved to entertain and spend quality time with friends and family. Each and every one of her grandchildren (Tamara Bloom/Haskin, David Aria Leib Bloom, Louise Shap/Miller, Daniel Shap, Michael Savelson z"l, Bob Savelson, Evan Savelson, and Aviva Savelson) were precious to her. We cherish her memory and value the tradition and quality of life that she instilled in us.
